BIO
Daryl started his musical career at
an early age studying the clarinet and saxophone and performing
in his grade school orchestra and church choirs. He grew up in
a family filled with accomplished musicians. His grandfather
played tenor sax with Count Basie and Duke Ellington and his
grandmother and mother were vocalists in choirs and nightclubs.
He knew early on that this would be his life's work. Trained
by his grandfather and private tutors, Daryl began to study different
forms of music from jazz and soul, to rock and pop. In his early
teens Daryl heard George Benson perform and immediately fell
in love with the guitar. Throughout his teens he performed with
regional bands playing guitar and singing with R&B, Pop and
Dance acts.
After high school Daryl attended
the University of Pittsburgh where he majored in musical composition
and arrangement-composing, as well as performing with artists
such as Geri Allen and Cecil Brooks III. Daryl also developed
a strong interest in audio recording. Also during this time Daryl
had his first experience with the record business placing songs
with Columbia and A&M Records, and being mentored by Dr.
George Butler, then a VP of Columbia. Subsequently, Daryl left
college to perform with a regional Pop act touring the eastern
U.S. and then eventually settled in North Carolina, where he
and two colleagues opened a full-service audio recording facility.
Daryl composed, produced, and performed on dozens of artists'
albums during this time, including tracks for Award-winning international
acts Third World, Jodeci, and Keith Washington.
Many opportunities came in New
York when a management deal was offered for some songs Daryl
had collaborated on with a university mate and his partner. This
led to a recording contract with RCA/Bahia Records as well as
doing production and performing with other labels and artists.
However, when the sudden resignation of the label president cut
his deal short, Daryl began touring again. He traveled around
Hawaii and the Caribbean performing with international acts such
as War and Roy Ayers, as well as doing recording sessions for
a number of artists, including R&B star Mya.
Acting on an offer to work with various
Asian artists, Daryl has spent the last few years travelling
between Southeast Asia, Australia, and the U.S., composing, performing
and producing for a diverse range of international artists from
Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, South Africa, India, and
Australia.
